Myanmar History from Myanmar Perspectives: CHAT’s Annual TrainingProgramme 20-26 February, 2013

2013 is the eleventh year of SEAMEO CHAT conducting its annual training programme, Myanmar History from Myanmar Perspectives. Six lectures were given on 20-21 February by the prominent Myanmar Historians: Myanmar Historical Background; Bagan: Art & Architecture; Mandalay: The Court & The City; Hanthawaddy: Maritime Trade and Land Empire; Ancient Cities in Myanmar; and Briefing on Field Study of Myanmar History form Myanmar Perspectives. The field trip began on 22nd when the participants went to Bago and visited the Shwe Mawdaw Pagoda, Kanbawzathadi Palace, Shwe Tha Hlyaung, Mahazedi and Kyaikpon Pagoda. From 23rd to 26th the study visits were made to Mandalay, Sagaing, and Bagan. In Mandalay,they visited Mandalay Palace, Taung Thaman Lake, Miltihued Shuttles Loom and Myanmar Tapestry Work in addition to the well known pagodas there. Also visited on 24th were the Gold Leaf Workshop in Mandalay, and on 25th and 26th many ancient pagodas and temples in Bagan were visited including Lawkananda Pagoda, Nagayone Temple, Thatbyinyi Temple, Dhammayangyi Temple,Bupaya Pagoda, Ananda Temple and Htilominlo Temple. Participants arrived back Yangon on 26th and left for Bangkok on 27th February. Four participants from Thailand joined the programme: Mr. Chayanin Nuisin and Mr. Iyakup Thanabat from the Fine Arts Department, Ms. Pamaree Surakiatt from Prince of Songkla University, and Ms. Thanthakorn from SEAMEO RIHED. Participants in their Evaluation Form mentioned that the Programme has made them understand more about the history of Myanmar and that they hoped the programme continue for the coming years.
