International Seminar On Traditions In A Changing World

SEAMEO CHAT steps into the new year 2015 with the International Seminar on Traditions in a Changing World in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of SEAMEO. On 13th January at the Opening Ceremony, H.E Dr. Zaw Min Aung, Deputy Minister for Education gave the opening speech which was followed by the keynote Address of Professor U Tun Aung Chain, former Director of SEAMEO CHAT. On the first day of the Seminar, three sessions took place with the moderators: Professor U Tun Aung Chain, Professor Magaret Wong, Professor/Head of the Department of History, Yangon University and Professor Degmar from Passau University, Germany.
The nine papers presented at the Seminar are:
(1) Preserving Teak Monasteries in Globalizing Myanmar: the Case of the Shwenandaw in Mandalay by Dr Francois Tainturier, Expert, WMF Conservation Project at the Shwenandaw Monastery, Mandalay
(2) The Performing Arts in the Digital Age: Musical Exchanges in Java, Bali and Thailand by Dr Arsenio Nicolas, Visiting Professor, Mahasarakham University, Thailand
(3) The Role and Function of Shaman in Myanmar by Dr Mya Mya Khin, Professor/Head, Department of Anthropology, Yangon University
(4) Space and place-challenging traditions at Sri Ksetra, Myanmar by Dr Charlottee Galloway, Lecturer, Asian Art History and Curatorial Studies, Australia National University, Australia
(5) Changing of Talagon Tradition in Kayin State by Dr Nyein Nyein Win, Lecturer, Department of Geography, West Yangon University
(6) Preservation of Dawei Nationals on Their Traditional Customs by Dr Maw Maw Aye, Lecturer, Department of History, Yangon University
(7) Tradition in a changing world: " Merariq" - elopement in the Sasak Society by Ms. Young Suwan, Capacity Building Consultant, Indonesia
(8) The Comparison between Kayin and Bamar Regarding Traditional Marriage by Dr Nant Pyoe Pyoe Kywe, Lecturer, Department of History, Yangon University
(9) Khauang Cawi of Senthang Tribe and Khua Do of Tedim Tribe by Dr Tin Maung Htwe, Lecturer, Department of History Yangon University
After the winding up by Dr. M.R.Rujaya Abhakorn, Director of SEAMEO SPAFA, the Director of SEAMEO CHAT thanked the moderators and the paper presenters for their presentations which have covered a wide range of traditions and welcomed them all to take part in the coming activities that SEAMEO CHAT has planned.
